Grouping students

Whole class teaching=students in rows and the teacher in front!
 Advantage                                      Disadvantage
*Easier of students to                       * It favors the group rather than the individual
share an emotion.                              *Not the best to encourage communicative language teaching
*Suitable for the teacher when
acting as the controller

Setting whole group classes
*Orderly rows
*Circle and horseshoe
*Separate tables

Students of their own=Individualized learning----------- vital step in the development of learner autonomy.
Advantages                                                                        Disadvantages
*It allows teacher to respond to individuals                     * It does not help a class develop a sense of
Student differences                                                                      belonging.
* It can develop students’ autonomy                                *It takes much more time than interacting
*Less stressful for students                                                     with the whole class

Pair work= Practice of the language TOGETHER
Advantages                                                                     Disadvantages
*increases the amount of speaking                              *It is very noisy
*Quick and easy to organize                          *Students may veer away from the point of the exercise

Group work=Suitable for tasks in which pair work is not sufficient or appropriate
Advantages                                                           Disadvantages
*Greater chance of different opinions                  *likely to be noisy
*Promotes learners’ autonomy                             * Some may become passive whereas others may
                                                                                       Dominate.

Deciding  when to put students in groups or pairs depends on:
*The Task
*Variety of sequence
*The mood
